Umeed takes India’s women’s empowerment efforts forward

Under its social empowerment programme, Umeed has initiated the formation of self help groups in Sangrur, Dhuri, Barnala, Malerkotla, Bhadaur, Mehalkalan, Sunam and Dirba. There have been many success stories. One such story is that of Balwinder Kaur, wife of Jalandhar Singh from Jodhpur village, who has been a SHG member for the past seven years. She has four children - three daughters and a son. It was difficult for her and her husband to manage their household and educational expenses of their children.

Her husband is a tailor. She thought of helping her husband by supplementing his income. She took a loan from her SHG and bought a sewing machine.. Her husband tied up with shops in Barnala and now gets duly cut cloth pieces for shirts, which they stitch at home and give back to the shopkeeper. Balwinder was so motivated that she took an additional loan of Rs 20,000 from the bank to buy two more machines.

Currently, the whole family is involved in stitching clothes as the couple have trained their their children as well. The total monthly income from the activity is close to Rs.20,000.Balwinder is also a beneficiary of Umeed’s dairy activity loan. She had earlier undergone diary training and availed of a loan of Rs. 1 lakh to buy a buffalo. She has since begun repaying her loan and still saves upto Rs. 5,000- per month.

The couple are thankful to Umeed for its timely guidance, help, support and motivation. This is an appropriate case of women’s empowerment which Umeed undertakes in the region. We encourage more women to come join us and help in our social empowerment and rural development efforts.
